Every August the peaceful town of Bakewell in the Peak District is woken up by 10 vibrant days of concerts, theatre, poetry, street performance, art exhibitions, live music, unique events and much, much more during Bakewell Arts Festival.  This year, the wake-up call promises to be louder than ever as young people from the region and beyond present a programme to ensure the most eclectic and exciting 10 days of the summer.

Local-boy-done-good returns to Bakewell Arts Festival by popular demand with this one-man, largely autobiographical show featuring songs from his career as a West End musical theatre performer, international concert performer and recording artist.

The Medway Centre, 7.30pm, £20

Acclaimed London-based dancer and choreographer Charlie England has devised a one-off dance workshop in collaboration with Bakewell Arts Festival.  Open to anyone aged 13 and upwards, the workshop will consist of basic dance techniques, a unique chance to learn how to audition for a West End musical, culminating in learning and performing a routine in front of friends and family.

Bakewell Arts Festival partners up with a brand new venue, THE HASSOP STATION CAFE, to present an evening of blistering blues/rock guitar and tight Hammond grooves, featuring Steve Buckley on guitar (google him- you'll be amazed!) , Steve Brown on organ duties and Eryl Roberts on drums.  A leisurely walk along a section of the Monsal Trail followed by dinner and jazz/blues/rock - what could be better?

As part of Bakewell Arts Festival, the extraordinary Moving Stories theatre company presents 'Vanessa & Virginia', a new play by Elizabeth Wright based on the acclaimed novel by Susan Sellers about the remarkable sisters, novelist Virginia Woolf and artist Vanessa Bell.

Fusing original music by composer Jeremy Thurlow and poetic text, the play creates a dream-like, meditative quality, moving gracefully through time and seamlessly transporting the audience thorugh places, events and memories, enhanced by an interwove projected backdrop of evolving images, inspired by paintings by Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant.

Exciting new regional company Adaire to Dance storm Bakewell Arts Festival to offer young dancers and choreographers aged 13-19 years the chance to create a curtain-raiser piece for their BAF opening on 10 August.  Two workshops on 8 and 9 August incorporating a technique class followed by creative work - resulting in a final piece created and performed entirely by the workshop participants.  All abilities and levels welcome.

Combine Shakespeare's 'The Taming of the Shrew' with the music of Cole Porter and you get this Bakewell Youth Theatre play within a play, where the complicated lives of the actors offstage collide with those of the characters on stage.

Bakewell Arts Festival Events @ the Tent once more throws caution to the winds for our open mic night.  Shrinking violets and polished professionals alike are welcomed to the stage for their crowd-pleasing moment - with inevitably magnificent results.  This could be your chance to shine, so make sure you're in the Tent on the 12th with whatever instrument you would like to wow the crowd with.  For those who prefer to stand and stare, join us in the transformed car park to see what all the fuss is about.

Mills and Chimneys – Medway Community Community Centre, Bakewell

Part of - Bakewell Arts Festival

 Put together in 2010 as part of Derbyshire Literature Festival the Mills and Chimneys project brought together a group of musicians from all ages and backgrounds to write and perform songs inspired by the Derbyshire landscape and it’s many traditions. The project has seen sell out concerts and enthusiastic audience responses. Recordings made during the project achieved critical acclaim and future plans include collaborations with Viva Orchestra. For this specials concert the musicians – David Gibb, Lucy Ward, Julian Butt, Sarah Matthews, Elly Lucas and Mike smith come together for a great evening of music and stories and will also perform music from individual projects.

 I enjoyed the cross- fertilisation of ideas and arrangements presented on the tracks, which left me wanting more!

Farmers Markets are an opportunity to buy food and local products direct from  local farmers, producers and craftsmen. They sell only products which have been grown, raised, baked or caught locally, normally within 30 miles. They do not sell GM foods. Many stallholders will be registered organic producers.
 

Bakewell Farmers Market is held at the Bakewell Agricultural centre and takes place on the last Saturday of the month from 9 am to 2 pm.

The Oxfam Supporters' Group invites you to come and visit some of Bakewell's Secret gardens on Sunday 28th August from 2.0pm -6.0pm.The gardens are in the Butts Road to Yeld Road area. A  £4 payment will ensure access to all the gardens. There will be gardens of all shapes and sizes,with a great variety of plants  and garden design.You will find new views of Bakewell and the surrounding area will be opened up. There are likely to be some steps and steep slopes.A free bus will take you from Bakewell Information Centre to the gardens and back. Refreshments will be available in All Saint's Church. There will be a plant stall and some other stalls.
