Shifting Sands Theatre Company.Giving a modern comedic twist to Shakespeare’s popular tragedy, this acclaimed clown theatre sets the action in a pub in the here and now, with pub landlord as king. A compellingly inventive retelling mixing slapstick and pathos with warm humour, this is a marvellously fun night. Two pints of lager and a play please.Three drinking buddies take it upon themselves to perform their own version of Shakespeare’s great tragedy, and set it in their local, ‘The King Lear’. Instead of a kingdom they have a pub! Instead a king they have a publican! When pub landlord Mr Lear announces that he is to retire and divide the pub between his daughters he imitates his famous namesake and demands to know which of them loves him the most. And so unfolds a playful, accessible (and beer-stained) comic retelling of this tragic classic, a family saga to rival the greatest, of old (geezers) versus young (whippersnappers), of jealousy and frustration. Set in a pub. Shifting Sand’s wonderful production is both hilarious and heart breaking, an exuberantly entertaining show delivered with energy and panache, a tour de force of physical comedy, clowning and vibrant storytelling. There is irreverence, but no parody: Shifting Sands play with Shakespeare’s ingredients yet remain faithful to his themes. Shifting Sands Theatre has developed a reputation for presenting a clown’s eye view of epic tales, classic texts and devised contemporary material: potent drama based upon playfulness. NEW! Cinema moves to the Assembly Room Theatre. The Girl on the Train is the story of Rachel Watson’s life post-divorce. Every day, she takes the train in to work in New York, and every day the train passes by her old house. The house she lived in with her husband, who still lives there, with his new wife and child. As she attempts to not focus on her pain, she starts watching a couple who live a few houses down — Megan and Scott Hipwell. She creates a wonderful dream life for them in her head, about how they are a perfect happy family. And then one day, as the train passes, she sees something shocking, filling her with rage. The next day, she wakes up with a horrible hangover, various wounds and bruises, and no memory of the night before. She has only a feeling: something bad happened. Then come the TV reports: Megan Hipwell is missing. It’s Christmas Eve, 1183 and a family are gathering for the festive season, but there’s more at stake than turkey and tinsel. A crown, a princess and the richest province on the continent are all up for grabs. Henry II is getting old. His three sons are snapping at his heels. His wife, his mistress and his arch enemy are all under the same roof. “Well – things look a little bleak for Henry, don’t they?”
Can the old lion outwit them all and hang on to his crown, his kingdom and his beautiful mistress. Written in 1966, this witty, fast paced drama inspired the film of the same name starring Peter O’Toole and Katherine Hepburn and has become a modern classic. “It’s 1183 and we’re barbarians!”
